How do I connect the AWS MCP server to Claude?

AWS runs a managed remote MCP server. For Claude Desktop, add https://aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp?oauth=initialize as a remote connector and complete AWS sign-in. Your AWS identity needs the OAuth permissions described in AWS's setup guide.

For Claude Code with OAuth:

Does the AWS MCP server work with ChatGPT?

Yes. AWS documents OAuth support for ChatGPT. Where your ChatGPT account and workspace allow custom MCP connections, add https://aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp and complete AWS sign-in. If the client does not start OAuth discovery, AWS advises appending ?oauth=initialize. This remote option does not require a local proxy.

When should I use the local AWS proxy?

Use AWS's SigV4 option when you need multiple AWS profiles or a client without the OAuth flow. Install uv and AWS CLI 2.32.0 or later, sign in with aws login, and confirm the intended account with aws sts get-caller-identity. Claude Desktop and Cursor can use this configuration:

The endpoint is required. These examples use US East (N. Virginia); AWS lists other supported regions and optional profile and region settings in its setup guide. Choose the account and permissions before allowing an assistant to make changes.
