ClickUp vs Notion: which should a small team choose?
Short answer: choose Notion if your team's center of gravity is writing: a wiki, specs, meeting notes and lightweight databases, with tasks as one part of that. Choose ClickUp if your center of gravity is tasks and delivery: assignees, statuses, sprints and time, with docs alongside. If you need both equally, decide which one people will open first every morning.

Docs-first or tasks-first?
Picture a five-person startup. It has a product wiki, weekly meeting notes, a hiring tracker and a sprint board.
In Notion, everything is a page, and databases are pages with structure. The wiki is excellent, meeting notes link straight to the decisions they produced, and the sprint board is a database view. It works well until you want task-level depth: workload, time logs, many statuses per team. Then you start building it yourself.
In ClickUp, everything starts as a task in a list. The sprint board, statuses and assignees are native, and ClickUp's free plan already includes collaborative docs, Kanban boards, sprint management and a calendar view (ClickUp pricing). The docs are good enough for specs; they are rarely where a team falls in love with writing.
Neither is wrong. The startup should choose based on which half of its work causes more pain today.
How do ClickUp and Notion price their plans?
Notion lists four plans per member per month: Free, Plus at $10, Business at $20 and Enterprise at custom pricing (Notion pricing). The page has a pay monthly or pay yearly toggle that saves up to 20% yearly, so check which billing period the price you see applies to. Free has limits that matter for teams: 5MB file uploads, 7 days of page history, and a block limit once more than one member shares the workspace.
ClickUp is moving workspaces to new plans, and its pricing page shows two lineups:
- Older: Unlimited $7 per user per month yearly ($10 monthly), Business $12 yearly ($19 monthly), AI as an add-on.
- Newer: Core $9 and Business $17 per user per month yearly, with pooled AI credits included, and Max at $100.
For a five-person team, Notion Plus is $50 a month and ClickUp Unlimited is $35 to $50, depending on billing.
How do they charge for AI?
This is where the two differ most for a small team.
Notion gives Free and Plus only a trial of Notion AI. Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search (beta) come with Business at $20 per member (Notion pricing). Custom Agents need Notion credits, at about $10 per 1,000, and only Business and Enterprise workspaces can buy them. When shared credits run out, agents "will pause automatically until credits reset or an admin adds more credits" (Notion credits help).
ClickUp sells Brain AI at $9 per user per month with 1,500 AI Super Credits, or Everything AI at $28 with 5,000. Extra credits are $10 per 10,000. The newer plans include pooled credits instead, 1,000 per user per month on Core (ClickUp pricing).
So, for full AI, Notion means moving everyone to Business. ClickUp lets you add AI on a lower plan.
Can ChatGPT or Claude work in ClickUp and Notion?
Both have official connectors (MCP servers) with read and write access.
- Notion MCP is hosted by Notion. Assistants can search, read, create and update content within what the user can access, and the docs name Claude Code, Cursor and Codex as example clients (Notion MCP).
- ClickUp MCP is on all plans and works with ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude and VS Code. Without Everything AI, the workspace shares a rolling 24-hour cap: 100 calls on Free Forever, 300 on Unlimited, 1,000 on Business (ClickUp MCP).

Pick ClickUp if / pick Notion if
Pick ClickUp if:
- Your pain is missed deadlines and unclear owners, not scattered notes.
- You want sprints, statuses and time in one app without building them.
- You want AI without moving every seat to a $20 plan.
Pick Notion if:
- Your pain is knowledge spread across Google Docs, Slack and heads.
- You want one place to write, with tasks as a database you shape.
- You are happy on Business if you want the full AI features.
What is an alternative to ClickUp and Notion for teams using ChatGPT or Claude?
Flori combines CRM and project management in one workspace and connects to a team's own ChatGPT, Claude or other assistant over MCP.
ClickUp and Notion both sell AI on top of the plan, and neither has a CRM of its own: in both, you build one from templates. If your team already pays for ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor and also works with clients, Flori is worth considering. It is a CRM and project manager in one workspace: accounts, people, deals and a pipeline board next to projects, tasks and dependencies, plus Docs and Facts for team knowledge and documents and sheets linked to projects. Your own AI does the work. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI over MCP, per workspace or per project, read-only or with update access. Results wait in a review queue. Flori has a free plan, then Core is $10 and Premium $24 per person a month billed yearly ($12 and $29 billed monthly). It has no whiteboards and does not send invoices.
