Asana vs ClickUp: which suits a growing small team?
Short answer: choose Asana if you want an opinionated tool that works well with little setup, invite lots of clients or contractors as free guests, and prefer AI that is metered per request. Choose ClickUp if you want to shape the tool around your process, need time tracking and docs in the same app, and care most about price per seat as you grow.

Opinionated or configurable?
This is the decision that matters most, and it shows up in week two, not on the pricing page.
Asana makes choices for you. Projects, tasks, assignees and due dates work the same way across the workspace, so a new hire or a client guest understands any project they open. You give up some flexibility in exchange for consistency.
ClickUp hands you the parts. Spaces, lists, custom fields, statuses, views and automations combine into whatever you design. ClickUp's own CRM guide shows the pattern: pick a hierarchy, choose views, add fields, define statuses, then automate. That is powerful, and it is also a job someone keeps doing as the team changes.
A useful test: ask who on your team will own the setup in six months. If the answer is "nobody", Asana's defaults will serve you better. If you have an operations person who enjoys it, ClickUp gives them more to work with.
What does each cost at 8 people?
Seat rules change the math once you pass five people. Asana's FAQ says seats are added one at a time from 2 to 5 users, then in steps of 5 up to 30 (Asana pricing), so an 8-person team buys 10 seats. ClickUp prices per user.
| Plan (annual billing) | Seats billed | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Asana Starter, $10.99 | 10 | $109.90 |
| Asana Advanced, $24.99 | 10 | $249.90 |
| ClickUp Unlimited (older lineup), $7 | 8 | $56 |
| ClickUp Business (older lineup), $12 | 8 | $96 |
| ClickUp Core (newer lineup), $9 | 8 | $72 |
ClickUp is mid-transition between these lineups, and its help center notes that not all workspaces have been upgraded yet (ClickUp MCP article). Confirm which applies to you. On the older lineup, AI is extra: Brain AI adds $9 per user per month (ClickUp pricing).
How do Asana and ClickUp meter AI?
They count different things, which changes how predictable your bill is.
Asana counts requests. AI Teammates, Asana Dash and AI Studio are included on Starter and above, with monthly allowances. Past those, each extra AI request costs $0.50 in prepaid packs or $0.60 on pay as you go, and you can set a monthly spend cap (Asana pricing). If you know roughly how often people ask the AI to do something, you can estimate the bill.
ClickUp counts credits. Brain AI includes 1,500 AI Super Credits per user per month, Everything AI 5,000, and extra credits cost $10 per 10,000. The newer plans pool credits instead: 1,000 per user per month on Core and 1,500 on Business (ClickUp pricing). Different actions use different amounts, so the bill depends on what people use AI for.
What about guests and clients?
For agencies and studios that bring clients into the tool, this can decide it.
- Asana Starter includes unlimited free guests (Asana pricing).
- ClickUp Free Forever includes unlimited free plan members (ClickUp pricing), which suits small teams that want everyone in one workspace at no cost before they pay.
How do outside assistants connect?
Both have official MCP servers with read and write access, but the limits differ.
- Asana MCP uses OAuth, can create and manage tasks and projects, and documents Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and VS Code (Asana MCP docs). The page does not state a plan requirement.
- ClickUp MCP is on all plans. Without the Everything AI add-on, the whole workspace shares a rolling 24-hour cap: 100 calls on Free Forever, 300 on Unlimited, 1,000 on Business. Every read and update counts, and ClickUp says you cannot currently monitor how many calls you have used (ClickUp MCP).
If several assistants will update your projects all day, check those caps against your expected volume.

What is an alternative to Asana and ClickUp for teams using ChatGPT or Claude?
Flori combines CRM and project management in one workspace and connects to a team's own ChatGPT, Claude or other assistant over MCP.
Asana meters AI per request and ClickUp per credit. Both assume you will use their AI. If your team already pays for ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor, Flori starts from that instead. It is a CRM and project manager in one workspace: accounts, people, deals and a pipeline board alongside projects, tasks, dependencies, a time log on tasks and a client page for approvals. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Cursor, Codex or Gemini CLI over MCP, per workspace or per project, read-only or with update access. When a task is marked Ready for AI, one assistant reserves it, to reduce overlapping work among assistants that honor the claim, and results wait in a review queue where you approve, request changes or undo. Flori has a free plan, then Core is $10 and Premium $24 per person a month billed yearly ($12 and $29 billed monthly). It does not do invoicing. FAQ
Is Asana or ClickUp cheaper for a small team? ClickUp, in most cases. ClickUp Unlimited is $7 per user per month billed yearly, and the newer Core plan is $9. Asana Starter is $10.99 per user per month annually, and Asana sells seats in steps of 5 between 5 and 30 users, so an 8-person team pays for 10 seats.
Which is easier to set up, Asana or ClickUp? Asana usually needs less setup, because projects and tasks work the same way across the workspace. ClickUp is built from configurable parts such as Spaces, custom fields, statuses and automations, which gives more control but takes ongoing work. Its own CRM guide is a good example of that build process.
How is AI billed in Asana versus ClickUp? Asana includes AI from Starter within monthly allowances and charges $0.50 per extra request prepaid or $0.60 pay as you go. ClickUp uses credits: the Brain AI add-on is $9 per user per month with 1,500 credits, newer plans include pooled credits, and extra credits cost $10 per 10,000.
Does ClickUp limit how much ChatGPT or Claude can use it? Yes. Without the Everything AI add-on, ClickUp's MCP server allows 100 calls per rolling 24 hours on Free Forever, 300 on Unlimited and 1,000 on Business, shared by every connected assistant in the workspace. Every read and update counts. Asana's MCP page does not state a similar cap.
Can Asana or ClickUp track time? ClickUp has time tracking, and its MCP server lets assistants start and stop timers and log entries. Asana lists Timesheets and Budgets as an add-on for Starter, Advanced and Enterprise; its pricing page does not give a price for it.
