Claude Cowork for a small business: what it does and what to connect
Short answer: Claude Cowork is the part of Claude that does multi-step work for you instead of only answering: you describe an outcome, it works across the files and connected apps you choose, and you come back to finished documents, spreadsheets or drafts to review. It comes with every paid Claude plan, runs in the cloud so it keeps going when your laptop is closed, and can repeat tasks on a schedule. For a small business, its usefulness depends on what you connect: your email and calendar, your files, and the place where your customers and work are recorded.
As of November 2026. Details come from Anthropic's own pages, linked below, and change often. Written by Flori, a CRM with projects that Cowork can connect to as a custom connector.
What is Claude Cowork?
Anthropic's Cowork page calls it the place "where you hand Claude real work." It uses the same agentic approach as Claude Code, but for knowledge work rather than software: research, analysis, documents and other multi-step jobs.
According to Anthropic's getting started article, Cowork:
- Plans before it acts. It breaks a request into steps, runs them, and shows you each one so you can redirect it.
- Runs in the cloud. Sessions and files live with your Claude account, work continues when you close your laptop, and you can check in from your phone.
- Repeats work on a schedule. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud with no device online, daily, weekly or monthly.
- Produces real files. Spreadsheets with working formulas, slide decks and formatted documents.
- Reaches your computer when it must. Local files, your browser and computer use need the Claude Desktop app open on that machine.
Anthropic is merging chat and Cowork into one experience. Until that reaches your account, Cowork appears as an option next to Chat in the message box.
Which Claude plans include Cowork?
Cowork is for paid plans only. Anthropic's article lists:
| Where | Plans |
|---|---|
| Claude Desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux in beta) | Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise |
| Web and mobile | Pro, Max, Ultra and Team (beta on Team), and Enterprise when an owner turns it on |
| Claude in Chrome side panel | All paid plans; Enterprise needs an owner to enable it |
Anthropic notes that usage limits apply. Project sharing and organization-wide connector management come with Team and Enterprise, which is why a small team that shares customers often starts there; see our guide to Claude for Small Business for the plan question in more detail.
What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code?
Anthropic's answer is that Claude Code is built for software engineering, writing and shipping code, while Cowork is built for non-coding knowledge work. They share the same way of working: take a goal, plan it, use tools, report back. A business owner who never opens a terminal uses Cowork; a developer uses Claude Code, and many teams use both.
What can a small business hand to Cowork?
Anthropic's own examples include a weekly marketing readout built every Monday from analytics and a tracking sheet, first-pass review of a folder of contracts against a playbook, reconciling regional spreadsheets, and a memo on every open deal built from a quarter of call notes.
Translated to a small service business, good first tasks look like this:
- A Monday brief. Overdue invoices, deals that went quiet, and the three things that need you this week.
- Follow-ups from calls. Turn this week's call notes into drafted replies and next steps on the right customer.
- Proposals from notes. Draft a proposal from a call transcript and last year's similar job, for you to price.
- Account research. Before a first call, gather what's public about the company and what you already know.
- Month-end prep. Match payments to invoices and list what doesn't reconcile.
Each of these is only as good as the information Cowork can reach, which is why connectors come first.
Which connectors should a small business give Cowork?
Cowork uses the same connectors as the rest of Claude. Anthropic's directory has more than a thousand; our list of every Claude connector shows them all. Start with the four places your work actually lives:
| Job | Typical connectors | Why Cowork needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Email and calendar | Gmail and Google Calendar, or Microsoft 365 | Most follow-ups and meeting prep start here |
| Files | Google Drive, Dropbox, Box or Notion | Proposals, contracts and past work to learn from |
| Money | QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks or Stripe | Invoices, payments and month-end |
| Customers and work | Your CRM and project tool | Who the customer is, what was sold, what's due next |
The last row is the one most small businesses are missing. Email, Drive and accounting each hold a piece of a customer, but none of them says what was agreed, who owns the next step or when it's due. If that record lives in a spreadsheet or in someone's head, Cowork has nothing reliable to read or update.
How does Cowork keep track of a customer between tasks?
Two ways, and they work best together.
Cowork projects and memory. Anthropic's projects article says each Cowork project has its own instructions, scheduled tasks, context and memory, and that what Claude learns in one project doesn't carry into another. Memory is shared with your chats when Cowork runs in the cloud. It is also personal: a teammate's Claude doesn't inherit what yours remembered, and on Team plans memory can be switched off by owners.
A shared record through a connector. Customers, deals, tasks and decisions kept in a CRM or workspace that Cowork connects to are the same for every teammate and every assistant, and they're still there when a project is archived. For how Claude and ChatGPT projects compare on this, see Claude Projects vs ChatGPT Projects.
Is Claude Cowork safe to use on business data?
Anthropic is direct that Cowork "has unique risks due to its agentic nature and internet access." The built-in safeguards it describes:
- You choose the folders and tools Cowork may use.
- Deleting a file needs your explicit permission every time.
- With permission settings on, Claude shows its plan and waits for approval before anything significant.
- On Team and Enterprise, admins set access by team and control tool permissions, and can turn off web search.
Add your own: connect with read access first, require approval for anything that sends, pays or deletes, and review the first few runs of any scheduled task before letting it run unattended.
Where does Flori fit?
Flori is a CRM with projects built in, for freelancers and small teams, and it gives Cowork the customer-and-work record from the table above. It connects as a custom connector at `https://useflori.com/mcp` with browser sign-in, with read-only or update access per workspace or project.
With Flori connected, a Monday brief can read real deals and overdue tasks instead of guessing from email, and follow-ups land as tasks on the right customer for you to approve. Saves record which assistant made them, so you can see what Cowork changed. The same record is there for ChatGPT, Codex or a teammate. FAQ
Is Claude Cowork free? No. Anthropic lists Cowork for paid plans only: Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise. Desktop access is on all paid plans, while web and mobile access is on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team, and on Enterprise when an owner enables it.
Does Claude Cowork keep working when my computer is off? Yes, for most tasks. Anthropic says Cowork runs sessions in the cloud, so work continues when you close your laptop, and scheduled tasks run with no device online. Tasks that need local files, your browser or computer use need the Claude Desktop app open on that computer.
Can Claude Cowork use my connectors? Yes. Cowork uses the same connectors directory as the rest of Claude, and you can add custom connectors for apps that aren't listed. You choose which tools it may use, and on Team and Enterprise plans owners control which connectors are available.
Does Claude Cowork remember things between tasks? Yes, within limits. When Cowork runs in the cloud it shares memory with your chats, and each Cowork project keeps its own memory that doesn't carry into other projects. Memory is per person, so a shared record such as a CRM is still the way to give a whole team the same context.
