Custom connector not showing in ChatGPT, Claude or Grok?
A missing connector usually comes down to one of three things. Your plan does not include custom connections, a workspace admin has to add or allow it, or you are looking in the wrong place or on a phone. Find your assistant below. Each section lists where the setting lives now, who can add a connector, and the checks that fix the common failures.
Quick checks for any assistant
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There is no option to add a connector | Your plan or workspace role does not allow custom connections | Check the plan table below. On a work plan, ask an admin. |
| It is added, but the assistant ignores it | It is not turned on in this chat | ChatGPT: type @ and choose it, in each message that needs it. Claude: choose + in the chat, then Connectors, and turn it on. |
| It worked before and now fails | The service changed, or your sign-in expired | Reconnect. In a ChatGPT workspace, an admin may need to refresh it. |
| It works on the computer but not the phone | Mobile support is limited | ChatGPT custom connections are web only. Add Claude connectors on the web or desktop. |
| Sign-in keeps failing | The wrong account or workspace is signed in | Sign out of the service, sign in to the account you want, and connect again. |
ChatGPT
Where it is now: on the web, open Settings → Apps and choose Create. Some accounts show this as Plugins instead: select the plus button, then the option to add a custom server. Name it, enter its address, set up sign-in and finish creating it. Older guides tell you to turn on developer mode first. OpenAI’s current instructions say “You don’t need to turn on Developer Mode first.”
- Who can add one. On Business, “Only admins and owners can create and publish plugins” for custom servers. On Enterprise and Edu, admins can grant that permission to selected members in Workspace settings → Permissions & roles.
- Plans. Full support, including saving and changing data, is available on Business, Enterprise and Edu. Pro can connect with read access only. OpenAI’s article does not list Free, Go or Plus.
- Web only. OpenAI answers the question about mobile with “No - web only.”
- Choose it in each message. “App selection applies to the message where you use it, not the entire conversation.” Type @ again when a follow-up needs new data.
- Older workspaces. Some still show the earlier path, Settings → Apps → Create.
- It broke after the service updated. ChatGPT keeps a frozen snapshot of a connector’s actions. Changes are “not applied until an admin reviews and publishes an update”, and admins are not notified automatically. In a workspace, ask your admin to refresh it. If you added it yourself, open it in Settings → Apps (or Plugins) and choose Refresh.
- Deep research only reads. It can use custom connections “for read/fetch actions only”.
Claude
Where it is now: open Customize → Connectors, choose Add, then Custom, then Web (some accounts show + Add, then Add custom connector). One Anthropic support article still calls this Settings → Connectors, so either label may appear. The direct address is claude.ai/customize/connectors.
- Free plan limit. “Free users are limited to one custom connector.” If you already have one, remove it before you add another, or upgrade.
- Team and Enterprise. Owners add the connector first, from Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web. Each member then chooses Connect. In projects on these plans, connectors work only in private projects, not shared ones.
- Turn it on in the chat. Use the + button at the lower left of the chat, then Connectors, to turn each connector on or off for that conversation.
- Mobile. Installing connectors on mobile is in beta. Add the connector on the web or in Claude Desktop, and it will be available on your phone the next time you log in.
- Sign-in settings cannot be edited. To change how a connector signs in, remove it and add it again.
- It works in Claude Code but not on claude.ai. Claude Code connects from your computer. Claude on the web and Claude Desktop connect from Anthropic’s cloud. A server running on your machine, on a private network or behind a VPN will not connect from claude.ai.
- An admin blocked a tool. Organization owners can set each tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked.
Grok
Where it is now: go to grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom. Enter the address and complete any sign-in. xAI says connectors are “available to all Grok users”, and connectors work on the web, iOS and Android. xAI documents adding a custom one at grok.com/connectors.
- Business and Enterprise. “A team admin must add a connector in the cloud console” first, under Grok Business → Connectors at console.x.ai.
- The address must be public. Grok rejects addresses on your own computer or a private network.
- The address changed. If you used a temporary tunnel and its address changed, remove the old connector and add a new one.

| Claude Team and Enterprise | Owners first, then each member connects | In projects, private ones only |
| Grok | You | Web, iOS and Android |
| Grok Business and Enterprise | A team admin first, in the cloud console | Then members use it |
Connecting Flori?
Use the setup guide for your assistant: ChatGPT, Claude or Grok. After you connect, open Settings → Connections → Assistants in Flori to confirm the connection, then ask the assistant to read one project brief. If it still fails, email support@useflori.com with the assistant, your plan and the message you see.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I find developer mode in ChatGPT?
You no longer need it. OpenAI says you don’t need to turn on developer mode first. Look for Create under Settings → Apps, or for the option to add a custom server under Plugins. If neither appears, your plan or workspace role does not include it, or an admin has to add it.
Can I add a custom connector on Claude’s free plan?
Yes, one. Anthropic says free users are limited to one custom connector.
Do custom connectors work on mobile?
In ChatGPT, no: custom connections are web only. In Claude, installing on mobile is in beta, so add the connector on the web or desktop and use it on your phone. Grok connectors work on the web, iOS and Android, and xAI documents adding a custom one on the web at grok.com/connectors.
Why does my connector work in Claude Code but not in Claude on the web?
Claude Code connects from your own computer, while claude.ai and Claude Desktop connect from Anthropic’s servers. A server that is only reachable from your machine or network will work in one and fail in the other.
